  1. What is Digital Television?

Digital Television differs from traditional cable television service in the method by which it is delivered. Fiber optic cable and twisted pair copper cable (telephone wire) are used to transport the signals, rather than coaxial cable. Digital technology enables HickoryTech to "compress" its signals, thereby offering many, many more channels than were previously possible with traditional or Analog Cable services. A "Residential Gateway" device then converts the high-speed data for use by the customer's television set. Digital Television is often praised for its superior picture quality. Return to Top

  1. Does it mean I have to buy a Digital TV?
No, actually the opposite is true. One of the benefits of a Residential Gateway is that it converts a digital signal to accommodate your current TV. Because of this feature, you will be able to enjoy many more years of service from your current television, without having to buy an expensive Digital TV. Return to Top

  1. What is DSL?

Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) is a service being provided by telephone companies, with the help of ISPs. DSL technology provides normal voice service plus simultaneous Internet accesses over standard phone lines. Return to Top

Since it uses a single phone line for both telephone service and data, it allows you to be on the Internet without tying up your phone line. It allows for full-time 24-hour connection to the Internet. DSL requires very few changes to your existing hardware, and is quickly and easily installed. Return to Top

  1. Do I need to have the wiring in my home replaced?

This will vary from house to house...There are many different variables that will allow HickoryTech's newest technology to work over your existing cable lines. But, there will be some instances that HickoryTech will find it necessary to re-wire your home for a better signal, which will bring you a cleaner, sharper, and more defined picture than what you have viewed in the past!
